R kelly was denied bail earlier this week after pleading not guilty to charges of child pornography and sex trafficking. The 52-year-old is allegedly being kept in solitary confinement because he doesn’t feel safe around other inmates in prison.
The rapper is ‘fearing for his life’ in prison due to the sex crimes he’s accused of, his attorney Nicole Blank Becker claimed to TMZ.
Becker claimed that when she visited him recently, R Kelly said he prefers being in solitary over being held with the general population. She also alleged that the singer is illiterate, meaning that simple tasks like reading what is on a commissary list become difficult.
R Kelly is only allowed to speak to family and friends on the phone for 15 minutes a month in solitary, TMZ claimed. He allegedly has no access to television or the internet. Prisoners in general population can reportedly use the phone whenever they want.
The Ignition singer was arrested last Thursday by New York police detectives from the department of Homeland Security.
Joseph D Fitzpatrick, spokesperson for the US Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois, confirmed Kelly had been arrested on a 13-count indictment. In a statement (via New York Times), Fitzpatrick said: ‘The indictment includes charges of child pornography, enticement of a minor, and obstruction of justice.’
R Kelly previously appeared in court in Chicago in June, where he pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of sexual assault, which were brought against him on 30 May following the documentary Surviving R Kelly. Last week it was alleged that former friends of the rapper will ‘turn over 20 tapes of Kelly having sex with underage girls’.
Nemesis may have finally caught up with the controversial rapper. What do you think?
